Capelin Weather

The fog has been doing fun things for the past several days. It is there one minute and gone an hour later, flitting in and out like a politician’s opinion and never staying in the same place for long. I snapped this shot a few days ago at Middle Cove beach, when the capelin were running. They’re still rolling in on beaches along the Avalon, but thankfully the sun has come with them and the mists are generally burnt off by mid-day.

That was the case this morning at the Paradise Triathlon. John and I were on the volunteer squad for the event. When I awoke in Torbay, the fog was just starting to creep in. By the time I hit the road at 5:20, the sun had made its way skyward and looked like this:

Shrouded – no, it’s not a forest fire, but the sun rising in plain, old, ordinary fog.

When we got out to the triathlon, the fog was drifting around on the pond, hovering over the swim area and then retreating. until the start of the race, of course, when it rolled in thick.

Waiting for the swim. Flat calm, 17 degrees Celsius in the water. Perfect conditions to swim to…. what buoy? There are two more triangular ones out in the distance, about 300m away.

But it all went splendidly and we didn’t lose any swimmers in the mists. The kayakers surrounded and herded them along, shepherding them to the buoys and making sure that no one went seriously off-course. I’ll write more on the race later. The fog has been quite dramatic.
